Notre Dame men's basketball head coach Mike Brey wasn't pleased with the officiating during Saturday’s 85-84, loss to Florida State in Tallahassee.
Following the defeat, Brey took to the podium during his postgame press conference and didn’t hold back when discussing some of the late-game calls that proved to be costly in the loss to the No. 5 Seminoles.
"Sometimes, we're treated by the officials like we haven't brought football as a full member, but yet we get a full share of the ACC Network TV," said Brey. "Are you kidding me? He 'T's up our bench from across the court because he's pissed off at us? I'm frustrated, man. And I tip my cap to Florida State. They made great plays and I love Leonard (Hamilton) and they're a great team."
On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference issued a public reprimand of Brey for violating the ACC Sportsmanship Policy following Notre Dame’s game against Florida State. In addition, the league announced that an institutional fine has been issued to Notre Dame ($20,000) as a result of the violation. The funds from the imposed institutional fine will be placed into the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship account.
Brey’s postgame comments regarding officials were in direct violation of the ACC Sportsmanship Policy that states: “Public criticism of officials or public comments evaluating the officiating of particular contests is not in the best interest of intercollegiate athletics. Individuals associated with the athletics program are prohibited, therefore, from commenting while acting in an official capacity on officiating other than directly to the Conference office.”
The ACC considers this matter closed and will have no further comment.
Brey was extremely complimentary toward Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton, someone he calls a longtime, close friend, as well as the Seminoles, bur was clearly frustrated after the contest. After his comments at the podium, Brey was walking out of the room and made one final comment before referencing the Seminoles as a team that could make a deep run before this season comes to a close.
"C'mon man!" Brey shouted, as he was leaving the press room. "We're in the league too! We're in the league too, now! C'mon!"
Notre Dame returns to action at home vs. Wake Forest on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm ET.
