A small Ocean County volunteer EMS service is facing thousands of dollars in fines after a state audit.
What began as an anonymous complaint to the New Jersey Department of Health ends with a $617,000 fine for the Lanoka Harbor EMS squad. According to a notification sent to Lanoka Harbor EMS Chief Justin Meehan from the state, the tipster said that crews used unlicensed vehicles while providing 911 emergency services to the community.
A yearlong audit followed the complaint. The New Jersey Office of Medical Services says that the audit found several violations. Four emergency response vehicles unlicensed through OEMS were used 102 times in 76 days. The squad also failed to staff ambulances with at least two EMTs on 541 occurrences, according to the audit. Each violation carries at $1,000 fine.
Lanoka Harbor EMS Chief Justin Meehan responded to the fines and in an email to News 12 New Jersey says that there are several inaccuracies in the letter issued by the state. Meehan says that they are appealing.
The state fined the Somerville Rescue Squad in November close to $200,000 for similar infractions.
