D'Andre Swift 'seemed fine' to Kirby Smart - 247Sports

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Georgia suffered a few significant injuries in it's 37-10 loss to LSU on Saturday but, if you followed the game, the one that seemed to impact the game the most came last week against Georgia Tech.

Junior running back D'Andre Swift carried the football just two times for 13 yards on the night. He had 1,203 yards and seven scores coming into the game. He lined up in the slot and motioned into the backfield and back out more times than he set up as a traditional running back on the evening and he ended up catching three passes for 18 yards.

Five touches is quite low for a guy who averaged almost 18 touches per game during the 12-game regular season. He had to be significantly hurt, right?

Not if you listened to Kirby Smart during his post-game press conference or at any point during the week leading up.

"D'Andre Swift's real status was he practiced all week," Smart said. "He did everything we asked him to do. He said he was going to be able to play and thought he would be able to compete. He felt good in warmups, and he played. There was no -- I mean, as far as I know, he was fine. Towards the end of the game, we ended up holding him out once the outcome was decided, but he seemed fine to me."

Sources told Dawgs247 all week that Swift was in pain but didn't appear to be in danger of injuring himself worse if he played his usual role. On the play against Georgia Tech where he went down with the injury, Swift took a direct snap, ran around left end and was hit on his right side before fumbling. He favored his left shoulder as he went down and Smart called it a contusion after the game.

Smart was asked earlier this week if there was any concern that Swift's injury be like the one Kerryon Johnson had for Auburn going into the 2017 SEC Championship game. Johnson also had a shoulder contusion and it definitely seemed to slow him some in that game. Smart said that he didn't think the two situations were comparable, indicating that Swift should be healthier.

Johnson had three times as many touches as Swift in that league title game. He just wasn't as effective as he had been earlier in the season.

Swift told reporters after the game that he hasn't yet taken the time to think about his football future although it's expected that he'll make the early leap to the NFL Draft. Considering the current trend in College Football of players not participating in non-playoff bowl games, it's possible that Bulldog fans have seen the last of Swift in a UGA uniform.

If that's the case, it certainly didn't end the way he wanted it to.

"We lost," Swift said. "We lost tonight. We lost last year. We've got to do a better job of finishing in the future."
