Report: NFL to fine roughly 10 players for Steelers-Browns brawl - 247Sports

While the main combatants in Thursday night’s brawl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns have already received discipline, the number of players who ultimately get fined could be extremely high.

On Friday, the league announced a season-ending suspension for Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett, who ripped off Mason Rudolph’s helmet and hit him in the head with it. It also levied suspensions to Cleveland defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey for their roles in the fight. Rudolph, who ignited things by trying to rip Garrett’s helmet off, will also be fined. However, plenty more players will be getting hit in their wallets because of the brawl.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there could be numerous other fine coming. Schefter believes the total number of fines will climb to at least 10 by the time the NFL is done handing them out. All of the fines are expected to be announced next weekend.

A number of the fines will be due to the league’s policy on “entering the fight area.” According to Schefter, those that enter the fight with no active involvement will get fined $3,507 for a first-time offense. A second offense will be a $10,527 fine. It’s a little different for players who entered the fight area and had an “active involvement.” A first-time offense for that earns a player a fine of $7,017. A second offense will cost a player $14,037. Needless to say, the NFL will be collecting fine money for quite some time.

Garrett, the primary offender in the brawl, received an indefinite suspension that will last at least until the end of the 2019-20 season. He was supposed to meet with league officials prior to being reinstated for the 2020-21 season, but that may change. Early on Sunday, the NFL’s Ian Rapoport reported that Garrett may have a case to get his suspension set to a definite number.

"As Browns DE Myles Garrett gets set to appeal his lengthy suspension, one source said an argument will be that the CBA does not allow for indefinite suspensions for on-field acts. Garrett will hope for a finite number, as well as a reduction," Rapoport tweeted on Sunday.

In a statement released on Friday, Garrett apologized to Rudolph, his team, and the league for his impulsive actions in the middle of the fight.

“(Thursday) night, I made a terrible mistake,” Garrett said in the statement. “I lost my cool and what I did was selfish and unacceptable. I know that we are all responsible for our actions and I can only prove my true character through my actions moving forward. I want to apologize to Mason Rudolph, my teammates, our entire organization, our fans and to the NFL.

"I know I have to be accountable for what happened, learn from my mistake and I fully intend to do so.”

By this time next week, we should know the full extent of the discipline that the NFL decided to levy against players involved in the fight.
